On Tuesday, November 22, 2016, Buffalo, NY, was affected by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake, the most powerful quake in the area in 40 years. The tremor occurred at 9:50 A.M. and was felt throughout the Buffalo area, including Niagara Falls and its neighboring communities.

The epicenter of the quake was located near the south shore of Lake Erie, between Buffalo and Lackawanna, NY, and reportedly lasted for several seconds. Reports of the shaking were felt in locations around the area, including Amherst, Tonawanda, and West Seneca. There were no reports of any damage or injuries associated with the quake.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo issued a statement saying "We have not had anything on this magnitude in the Buffalo area since October 1977. We advise all residents to practice earthquake safety and to be aware that aftershocks are possible.

The US Geological Survey reported that it was the most powerful quake felt in the Buffalo area since October 18, 1977, when a magnitude 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in the same spot.
